Here’s a short reflection by Gillian Uhle, one of our team members, on her time at the Royal Hobart Show on the Fusion Southern Tasmania team reaching out to the thousands who come over the 4 days:
“Well what a time I had in Tassie recently.
I was thrilled last year (2011) to be asked to go to Hobart to be part of the team from Fusion Southern Tasmania that was providing a family friendly, free activity area at the Royal Hobart Show. And even more so to be asked to go again this year.
Last year the main reason I went was to be a living statue and to help train/encourage others who were having their first go at being living statues. I statued for 3 days and loved it ! This year the weather was freezing, windy and wet, so I only statued on the Saturday before flying home that night, and I still loved it.
This year, due to the weather, I was much more a part of the team in the tent providing activities. And guess what? I loved that too! I was also supported David, the Fusion Southern Tasmania Team Leader, as a couple of his key staff have had babies recently and therefore weren’t as available for him this year.
I was excited to be part of the team who were committed, joyful and enthusiastic about serving God through the free family festival because while I did lots of helping, I also watched others be hospitable, generous, kind, accepting, patient, caring and friendly. In other words create a community where no-body gets left behind.
It was an environment that one young girl – who was from one of the shows working families – described as “funner” than the rest of the show. An environment that another young boy felt ok enough in to share that he has 3 mums – 1 step mum and 2 gay mums, albeit briefly and quietly.
I would encourage anyone who wants to really reach out to those who are on the edge, to be part of this kind of event because it truly blesses people and you’ll be blessed too.”
