Today we heard from Melrose High School that they will be one of the schools who takes part in our pilot Community Education Program.

The program is designed to run over 6 weeks, and enable high school students to spend a day a week learning valuable job readiness skills, interpersonal skills, group skills and gain real work place experience.

Run at our Kambah youth and community hub, we will be starting it in Week 2 or 3 of Term 4.

“This has been a long time in the planning for us, so we are very excited about the impact this will have on the students involved, the schools and the volunteer mentors who will join the team”, said Brenton Reimann, CEO of Fusion Canberra.

Fusion Canberra is still waiting to hear from a couple nearby high schools as to whether they will be part of the pilot project.

We’ve had great response over the last 2 weeks from people interested in being volunteer mentors.

The three placement options for the pilot are:

1. Wombat Wardrobe: in our second hand clothing and other items store. Learning retail skills, customer service and communication skills;

2. Bike Workshop: learning skills to repair, maintain and service bikes and then sell the bikes in our Wombat Wardrobe store;

3. Horticulture & Aquaponics facility: learning the basics of growing plants in soil and aquaponic systems, worm farming and selling of produce through our second hand shop.
