Yesterday was the first day of our 6 week pilot Community Education Program.
An initiative of our Sustainability Education Centre, the program is for high school aged young people to give them valuable work experience, inter-personal skills, job readiness skills and group awareness.
The 7 participants met the 6 mentors and after orientation set to work in their respective work placement areas.
Two girls went to work in Wombat Wardrobe. Another two girls in our Horticulture and Aquaponics area. And three boys in the Bike Workshop making use of our newly constructed shed.
The bike workshop participants got to choose from the 18 donated bikes the one they will be working on for the next 6 weeks. Those in the horticulture area started planting out our newest and largest Aquaponics system so in both grow beds there are now tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini and cucumber seedlings. In Wombat Wardrobe both students learnt how to use the till, sort items, and tag clothes.
At the end of the day, after completing their logbook reflecting on what they did, learnt and want to work on next week, everyone took part in a group topic looking at what it’s like “Entering a group for the first time”.
All in all, a very industrious day, and a great start to what’s looking like a hope producing 6 days.
All part of our vision to create a Canberra where no-body gets left behind.
