Last week Bryan Babyack, the Manager of Fusion Canberra’s largest social enterprise, Hand to Hand, a second hand clothing store in Kippax Fair Shopping Centre, launched a volunteer recruitment drive.

“We have a fantastic team of volunteers who keep the doors open to the community Monday to Saturday but we need more!”, said Bryan.

Fusion Canberra took over the day to day management of Hand to Hand (www.handtohand.org.au) from Ginninderra Christian Church on 1st January 2012. It was going to close at the end of 2011.

“We didn’t want to see such a community connection point close down when the West Belconnen community needs more of these type of community enterprises not less. Added to this, Fusion Canberra has been wanting to get to know the Belconnen community for some time and this was a great opportunity to keep an important operation going as well as have a presence locally on the ground”, says Brenton Reimann, CEO of Fusion Canberra.

Due to health, family and changing job and study circumstances the team is often both welcoming new volunteers while saying good bye to others.

“This is why we officially launched an appeal to get the word out that we need more people who want to serve their community to join up. It’s very easy to express interest in volunteering, just drop into the shop during opening hours Mon-Fri 9.30-5pm or Saturdays 10-1pm, or jump on our website www.fusioncanberra.org.au”, said Bryan.

Volunteers get the benefits of joining a community of like minded people who want to reach out and serve their community as well as knowing they are helping the environment through recycling and upcycling and assisting Fusion Canberra’s vision of a Canberra where nobody gets left behind.

Who needs any more reason to give of their time?
